I have spent the year working on many different projects in AV, both commercial and residential. The good part is that despite many items going up in cost, it seems the TV market is quite stable. You can now get a 98-inch LED TV starting at about $1,900 and a Sony 98-imch for about $4K… speaking of 4k (resolution), it never ceases to amaze me the way picture quality is talked about. Near-still photos or video of well-lit outdoor scenes are not and have never been legitimate results for actual ‘what you’re going to see at home’ picture quality. Most movies you watch have a great deal of compression applied which basically throws resolution out the window. Motion and Compression are NOT friends.
Watch ESPN or HBO to see how good your video is for real. Many new TV’s still have a very average picture quality. So, if you ask what TV’s are good? The answer is many. If you ask what TV will give me the best Picture and Sound quality- without any additional equipment, the answer continues to be SONY OLED with the Acoustic Surface sound.
I get called out to look at commercial/professional audio systems, many times audio systems in hotels business etc. and they have a mixer which is 10 years old which seems to be the reason the system is not working. The problem is that there are many different digital mixers sold over the last 15 or so years which now today have problems. Sadly, unless you have the program to open the mixer, along with support from the manufacturer, it is almost impossible to repair, as the only real way to know where the problem is- is to substitute with a replacement (which you never have on hand). Then on top of that, these systems are tied to a Control system like Crestron or Control 4 and the entire system becomes unusable. I am a big believer of systems with standard control mixer mics and amps as these have not changed in behavior or application in 40 plus years, making it easy, quick and inexpensive to repair.
Whether dealing with residential or commercial, getting someone to repair a digital control system from a dozen years ago is almost impossible.
