This refers to music which is meant to be heard only as a background sound such that conversation can easily be made while your conversation can only be heard at your table. Having nice background music is very important to conversation styled pubs and to restaurants. Going into an establishment with no sound can be less than inviting and leaves the client feeling unsatisfied.
