These switchers used in commercial video applications allow for a moderately inexpensive switcher with built-in scaler to switch between sources and not lose the video sync. This keeps the monitors happy so they do not turn off or display an input or a message on screen. Fade to or through black is in lieu of a high powered (extremely expensive) fader which allows for transitions between cameras or other sources with high definition.
